Creating new habits can feel challenging, and sometimes we approach it wrong, trying to do all things at once. But instead try a doing one thing at a time to see what sticks, this will help make lasting changes that improve your life overall. Whether you're looking to exercise more, eat healthier, or practice mindfulness, building habits takes consistency and strategy. Here’s how you can effectively form new habits and make them stick.
1. Start Small
The key to building habits is to start with small, manageable actions. Instead of setting a goal to work out for an hour every day, begin with just 10 minutes. This makes the habit easier to stick to and helps build momentum. Work with the time you have and try not to get too overwhelmed. Example: If you want to start reading more, commit to reading just 5 pages a day.
2. Be Consistent
Consistency is the foundation of creating new habits and the key to success. Choose a specific time or trigger for your new habit and stick to it. The more consistent you are, the easier it becomes to make the habit automatic. Example: Meditate for 5 minutes right after you wake up every morning to create a routine.
3. Use Habit Stacking
Habit stacking involves linking a new habit to an existing one. By attaching the new behaviour to something you already do daily, it becomes easier to remember and implement. This is my absolute favourite way to create new habits as it is so easy to remember. Example: If you want to drink more water, do it right after brushing your teeth every morning.
4. Track Your Progress
Tracking your habits gives you a sense of accomplishment and helps you stay motivated. Use a habit tracker, journal, or app to record your progress each day. You may not do this forever, but certainly in the short-term it will help you be accountable and stay on track. Example: Mark off every day you complete your new habit on a calendar or in an app.
5. Be Patient and Forgive Slip-Ups
Building a habit takes time. Don’t get discouraged if you miss a day or two—what matters is getting back on track. Be patient with yourself and understand that forming habits is a gradual process. Life can be busy, but also remember not to make that an excuse either. If the new habit is important to you, make sure you can prioritise it in your life and work from there.
Creating new habits doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By starting small, staying consistent, and using habit-stacking techniques, you can create lasting changes that support your goals. Stick with it, and over time, these small actions will lead to big results!
